Christmas Card from Venice

Christmas Eve in Venice ... this is the most quiet and calmest day of the year. But before the evening sets in, our town is lit up by sparkling Christmas decorations, and red patches embellish calli e campi:  it is hundreds of Stella di Natale plants that now distingiush the windows of Venice.  And as this is the "Garden in Venice" Blog, I would like to share a few pictures of green and flowery impressions, and of course Christmas trees  ... and the quiet and enchanted atmosphere of Christmas eve in Venice.

Wishing You a Very Happy Christmas, from Venice.
Restaurant in Calle Larga San Marco, in a very lively and touristic zone just behind Piazza San Marco, Christmas time is the only time of the year with shops closing earlier
Walking along the streets, you will now notice winter vegetable baskets placed on tables in front of the restaurants, complete with locally grown radicchio and cicoria greens, and oranges from Sicily, next to billboards with festive menus written in gold handwriting for the day. There are fir decorations and even Christmas trees, embellished with chains of white electric lights and red ornaments and garlands.
... There is no frost and of course no snow (but there was, this February, for a few days). Today, restaurants have set their tables outside, as on sunny days in winter, it is possible to have lunch in the restaurant gardens. But this is how the day began ...
Morning: In the wintry mist, near the Campo della Maddalena, christmas trees are on sale, in all sizes and forms.

Noon: Christmas decoration in the Mercerie, just in front of the Clock Tower Torre dell'Orologio, behind the archway is Piazza San Marco
In the late afternoon, flimsy blue lights are gradually switched on above the calli

Some get ready for the late-evening Christmas eve church service Veglia di Natale at 23:30 pm at the Basilica di San Marco, just five minutes from our house. You can listen in to the mass with the Patriarch and the choirs of San Marco, all over the world, it is broadcast at Bluradio Veneto - Christmas in Venice.
